Lakemont University – The Atlanta Olympic Bombing

July 17, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Kevin Salwen is a longtime Lake resident and noted Co-author of The Suspect: An Olympic Bombing, the FBI, the Media, and Richard Jewell, the Man Caught in the Middle.

The story of Richard Jewell and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing is surely one of the most perplexing episodes of the latter 20th Century. How did a man so quickly go from hero to villain to a (brief) life of uncertainty? How did the case against Jewell come together so rapidly, who was behind it, what was the agenda? What does the Jewell case teach us about today’s media and law enforcement environment?

Come hear the riveting inside story from our lake neighbor Kevin Salwen, the co-author of The Suspect: An Olympic Bombing, the FBI, the Media, and Richard Jewell, the Man Caught in the Middle. Kevin will take us inside the project, which took five years to research and write, and which then became a source for Clint Eastwood’s film, “Richard Jewell.” (Yes, he hung out with Clint, as well as Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, and Jon Hamm).

We guarantee that Kevin’s tales will entertain and surprise, even if it’s a story you think you already know. (Listen for Tallulah Gorge, Mt. Airy, Demorest, and more great North Georgia locations in Jewell’s past.) Plus, Kevin is happy to talk about the writing process as well as dealing with Hollywood.
